“Since Maggie Dooley Heard Ukuhooley” by Cool Hand Uke

“When Maggie Learned the Hooley Hooley” is a 1916 Tin Pan Alley song inspired by the impact of Hawaiian culture at the 1915 San Francisco Worlds Fair. Tin Pan Alley was quick to cash in on the new “Hula” craze and in that year alone over a hundred songs from and about Hawaii were published. Composed by George W. Meyer (responsible for many song hits of the period) with lyrics by Edgar Leslie, Bert Kalmar “When Maggie Dooley Learned The Hooley Hooley was published the following year 1916. It was recorded by Marguerite Farrell a vaudeville performer and singer. Hear the original recording from the US Library of Congress here.
It was a hit at the time but the lyrics are typically Tin Pan Alley of the period, when I first them I cringed! but gradually over the last few years the novelty factor has grown on me

The brilliantly named Washington Square Harp and Shamrock Orchestra (headed by Mick Moloney) brought “Maggie” back when they titled their 2011 album “When Maggie Dooley Learned The Hooley Hooley” and featured the song. (cracking version)
